Augusto C. Sandino International Airport is the main international airport of Nicaragua, located in Managua, the capital. The airport is named after Augusto C. Sandino, a Nicaraguan revolutionary general. It is the busiest airport in Central America, handling over 4.5 million passengers in 2019.
The airport was originally christened as Las Mercedes Airport in 1968 but was later renamed after Sandino in 1979. The airport has two runways, with lengths of 2,440 meters (8,005 feet) and 2,200 meters (7,218 feet), respectively. It also has a single terminal, which was built in 1985. The terminal has a capacity of 2.5 million passengers per year. The airport is located approximately 11 kilometers (7 miles) from the center of Managua. It can be accessed by car, taxi, or bus. A public transportation system also connects the airport to the city center.
