It is approximately 6 km (3.7 mi) northwest of the city centre in the Emilia-Romagna region of Italy. The airport is named after Bologna native Guglielmo Marconi, an Italian electrical engineer and Nobel laureate, who is considered one of the fathers of radio communication.

The airport is one of the busiest in Italy, with over 9 million passengers handled in 2019. It is a hub for Alitalia, and also serves a number of other airlines, including Ryanair, easyJet, and Lufthansa. The airport has two runways, and can handle aircraft of all sizes.
